A Blast From the Past
Before and soon after I was born, my family lived in two tiny towns – Los Banos and Dos Palos, CA.
My dad, in addition to being a CHP officer, had his own column in the newspaper - “The Red Fox”– kind of a “who was spotted where” humor column. He acted in plays. He emceed beauty contests.
He should have never left that town; he was never as fulfilled again. Herb Caen of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote him a fan letter!
This ad was a real ad that ran in the local paper. My dad, Monsieur Francois, was to be the “guest lingerie expert” and was to appear at the local lingerie sale to make it an “uplifting” experience. He would also help you make selections “under his personal direction”, as he was expert in “handling the merchandise”.
We know, of course, that this kind of ad could never run today, even in jest, but it shows the kind of humor my dad had. Bawdy. Stupid. And wonderfully childish.
And I miss it.
