Keeping Depression at Bay

Every day it seems to get harder - trying to convince yourself of your worth when you can't land a job - hell, when you can't get answers to resumes sent.

I am trying to distract myself in many ways, but on days like this, it just seems to be an uphill, never ending battle.

So, I've decided to post a question. What do you do when you get this way? What steps do you take to keep yourself from sinking into the abyss? Give me some ideas.

I'm nearing the end of my rope, and there are only a couple of knots left...

Play. Find something you used to do as a kid and haven't done in years and do it. (Skip rope, hopscotch, catch lightning bugs, etc.) Be silly. Watch a funny movie. Take a bubble bath while drinking a glass of wine and listening to your favorite music. Go for a walk. Go see a kid's movie at the theatre. Take up a new hobby. Indulge yourself in something fun or wicked.

You get the idea....

I learned not to isolate myself when I feel like I might be geting depressed. The best thing you can do is pick up a phone and talk to someone .that way you wont feel so alone. That alone can make you feel better.

Hey, I guess you must have a likeness for something like a simple dance, salsa, or yoga; something which you have wanted to do for a long time.. Take up a new course somewhere, develop a hobby to dance. If you are not that type, then join a swimming class, take up some course which you have always wanted to do. Become a child once again. Meet new people!! Just dont think of anything; just concentrate on the new things u are about to do!! That way u can beat some part of depression!! :)

For me, blogging, writing down what I am feeling helps, just get it out. Stay away from alcohol (it's a depressant.) Walk that gorgeous dog of yours, and hour or so at a time, talk and cry with her, she will always be happy to listen. Rent or download a favorite movie, Soak in a long hot bubble bath and listen to music, practice breathing (it's weird, but it works), also there are known ways to kick up you levels of endorphin and dopamine either alone or with a very special friend, that I have heard can really help.

I think to myself "at the end of the day, there are many who are in a worse situation than the one I'm in". Other than that, what Tricotchick said is pretty good.

Don't rule out that fact that depression can be caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It's normal to feel down every once in awhile but if it persists daily for a long time drugs are sometimes needed.

Do something fun!

Thanks for your comments!

Jason, FYI, I do have a chemical imbalance that is being treated with anti-depressants, but even then, it's hard to keep a "stiff upper lip". All of these comments were really helpful!! I appreciate them.
